S. Korea rules out immediate revision of SOFA

Several ranking ruling and opposition party lawmakers have weighed in, demanding revision of the agreement on the ground that terms concerning environmental protection on the part of the U.S. forces are too abstract and thus subject to misinterpretations.

"While we are not sure that what we've found directly correlates to the claims made in the media, we have discovered information about materials buried on Camp Carroll in 1978," Lt. Gen. John D. Johnson, commanding general of the Eighth Army, said Monday.

A 1992 study indicated that a large number of drums containing chemicals, pesticides, herbicides and solvents were buried in the vicinity of the area identified by former soldiers in news reports, according to Johnson.
