Eight Foods You Should Almost Never, Ever Eat
For a helpful, straightforward guide to shopping Non-GMO, please see the Non-GMO Shopping Guide, created by the Institute for Responsible Technology.
You can also avoid GM foods that are not found in processed foods, if you know what to look for.
There are currently eight genetically modified food crops on the market:
- Soy
- Corn
- Cottonseed (used in vegetable cooking oils)
- Canola (canola oil)
- Sugar from sugar beets
- Hawaiian papaya
- Some varieties of zucchini
- Crookneck squash
This means you should avoid products with corn, soy, canola, and any of their derivatives listed as an ingredient, unless it's labeled USDA 100% Organic.
I appreciate that comment as well Ben. I agree, you can't really trust the USDA certification partially because of Tom Vilsak in the USDA.
If you live near small organic farms, you soooo have it made. It is VERY hard to find real food these days; not impossible, but difficult and expensive. The best foods that I buy is from a health food store that buys directly from local organic farmers and my dairy farmer who sells all kinds of foods and despises GMOs.
You can't trust the USDA standards anymore. The "100% Organic" label means. In fact, the farm bill is basically written by Monsanto these days, and in order for the boys from big ag. to get in on the growing market for organics, the standards had to be absurdly lowered. I know a small farmer in Southern Utah who is boycotting the certification process because it is such a joke. Buy local. Buy small. Buy sustainable. Know your growers or grow your own if you can.
Thanks for the comment and advice Ben. I plan on growing my own. I’ve been learning all I can these past few years. I know others will benefit from your comment as well!!
